Phra Pathom Chedi
📍 Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Pathom
At 120 metres, the tallest Buddhist stupa in the world — a colossal orange-gold bell rising over Nakhon Pathom on the site where Buddhism is believed to have first reached the region nearly two millennia ago.
You see it long before you arrive: a vast burnt-orange bell on a circular terraced base, dominating the town of Nakhon Pathom. Phra Pathom Chedi is the tallest stupa in the world, and one of the most sacred sites in Thailand — the present structure encases a much older one beneath.
Why It’s Interesting
The scale is the thing. Walk the circular gallery around the base, past Buddha images in every posture and a reclining Buddha hall, and the monument’s age and importance settle in. Despite its significance it sees relatively few foreign tourists, who tend to rush past Nakhon Pathom on the way west.
Getting There
Nakhon Pathom is an easy stop between Bangkok and Kanchanaburi or Amphawa, about an hour from the capital. The chedi sits in the middle of town beside the train station and market — pair it with a wander through the famously good local food stalls.
