Wat Khao Chong Phran (The Bat Cave Temple)
📍 Ratchaburi, Photharam
Every evening at dusk, an unbroken river of millions of wrinkle-lipped bats pours from a cliff cave beside this Ratchaburi temple for nearly an hour — one of the great wildlife spectacles of central Thailand.
At a limestone hill near Photharam, a hillside temple guards one of Thailand’s most reliable natural shows. As the light fades, bats begin to spill from the cave mouth — first a trickle, then a dense, swirling stream that ribbons across the sky toward the rice fields, lasting up to 45 minutes.
Why It’s Interesting
The colony is estimated in the millions, and the temple has long protected it; the bats’ guano supports the local community in return. Watching that endless dark current unspool against an orange sky, accompanied by the soft roar of wings, is genuinely moving — and far off the standard tourist track.
Best Time to Visit
Arrive before sunset (roughly 5:30–6:30 pm depending on the season) and find a spot looking up at the cliff face. Clear, dry evenings give the best, longest flights. Bring water and patience; the build-up is part of the magic.
