Don Hoi Lot

📍 Samut Songkhram, Mueang Samut Songkhram

A vast sandbar at the mouth of the Mae Klong River, famous for its colonies of razor clams — at low tide locals wade out to harvest them, and a strip of seafood shacks serves the catch within metres of where it was dug.

Don Hoi Lot is a quietly strange natural phenomenon: a huge bank of fine shell-sand exposed at the river mouth, riddled with the burrows of hoi lot, the razor clam. It’s both an ecological curiosity and a beloved weekend eating destination for Thai families.

Why It’s Interesting

When the tide drops, the sandbar emerges and harvesters fan out, tipping lime into the clams’ breathing holes to coax them up. Back on shore, a parade of stilted seafood restaurants turns that catch into grilled, steamed, and stir-fried feasts. It’s a place to eat well, watch a working tideland, and feel a long way from Bangkok.

Best Time to Visit

Everything depends on the tide and the season — the sandbar is most exposed in the hot months (roughly March–May) and around low tide. Check tide times before you go, or you’ll find the famous bar underwater.
